~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vladislav II Basarab of Wallachia was the second cousin of the famous Vlad III Dracula, aka Vlad Tepes (“the Impaler”). Vladislav II belonged to the House of Danesti. Vlad the Impaler belonged to the opposing House of Draculesti, established by his father Vlad II Dracul (Vlad the Dragon), giving young Vlad the name he’s so well-known by today: Dracula (Son of the Dragon).
Vladislav II and Dracula were rivals for the title of Voivode (Warlord) of Wallachia. Wallachia (located today in Romania) was in a near-constant state of conflict during this time, with rival family members vying for power while Ottoman Turks threatened their borders continually. The two cousins repeatedly battled over the throne.
In his struggle for power, Vladislav II murdered Dracula’s father and seized the throne from him in December 1447. Avenging his father, Dracula took the throne from Vladislav II in October 1448, only to lose it to his rival again just a couple of months later.
Vladislav II remained in power until August of 1456 when he had his final run-in with Dracula. On July 22nd, 1456, Dracula led an army of mercenaries into Wallachia and was intercepted by Vladislav II and his forces near Targsor.
The rival warlords agreed to settle the matter once and for all in a one-on-one duel right there on the spot. Dracula was victorious, killing Vladislav II in bloody hand-to-hand combat and remaining on the throne of Wallachia until his own death in July 1462.
Whether you’re a fan of medieval times or of Dracula himself, here’s your chance to own a REAL piece of history with this exceptional silver ducat minted under Vlad III Dracula’s rival, Vladislav II Basarab. This coin was minted and in circulation during Dracula’s lifetime in the very areas where Dracula himself was also known to be.
Over 500 years old, Vladislav II ducats are RARE coins and seldom appear on the market in such excellent condition with so many fine details intact.
This is the finest example of this coin that I’ve seen on the market today. The exact coin pictured is the exact coin you’ll receive. Thanks for looking, and good luck!
